The Sarapiquí area is part of the province of Heredia and covers 85% of its territory. To the north, Sarapiqui borders Nicaragua. The history of this region is quite interesting: long ago, it was a trading point between the Huétar tribe and the Mayan and Inca empires. Sarapiquí was also inhabited by the Votos (or botos), an ancient indigenous people of Costa Rica who shared the land with the Tises, Katapas and Guatusos. However, the Votos were the most important people. Another important historical fact is that the Sarapiquí River was the first route for transporting goods between Costa Rica and Europe.
The area is renowned for its varied flora and fauna. It's also perfect for relaxing. There are several nature reserves and national parks, such as Braulio Carrillo National Park, the largest in Costa Rica... The inhabitants of this "cantón" live from agriculture and livestock. The region's most important crops are bananas, pineapples, coffee, cocoa, corn and other fruits.
Sarapiquí offers a wide range of outdoor activities. Nature hikes, rock climbing, zip lines, horseback riding, rafting in the Sarapiquí River: you can feel the adrenalin going through the excellent rapids along the river and enjoy nature at the same time on the tour. What's more, you can take boat trips to enjoy the beautiful scenery and have the opportunity to observe animals such as birds, caimans and turtles, visit the butterfly sanctuary.
