The rainy season in Costa Rica: surprises at every palm tree corner

The rainy season in Costa Rica

In Costa Rica, the rainy season - often referred to as the green season - sometimes suffers from a bad reputation among travelers. Many fear that rain will spoil their activities or prevent them from fully enjoying the country. And yet... it's just the opposite! From May to November, Costa Rica reveals itself in all its splendour: the forests turn a dazzling green, nature reclaims its rights, and the wildlife is more active than ever.

What you need to do? Be prepared for the unexpected! Because here, the weather is anything but predictable - and that's not a flaw, it's an asset. Costa Rica, which alone accounts for 6 % of the world's biodiversity, is home to over 20 different ecosystems. So it's only natural that a squall should crop up even in the dry season, depending on the region, altitude or simply Mother Nature's mood.

So why travel during the rainy season? Here are a few (very good) reasons:

Exuberant, lively nature the landscapes are literally transformed. Take Guanacaste, for example: the driest region in the country, it turns green within hours of the first rains. The hills around the beaches are covered in foliage, flowers bloom, birdsong echoes in the villages: it's a breathtaking daily spectacle.

Fewer tourists, more authenticity It's a quieter time of year, with fewer crowds on the beaches and in the national parks. The result? Places that are almost deserted, and a greater likelihood of observing animals in their natural habitat, undisturbed by noise or crowds.

Lower rates Low season means better prices. Accommodation and activities are often less expensive, so you can enjoy more... for less!

Exceptional natural events The rainy season is ideal for observing certain emblematic species. This is the best time to see humpback whales on the South Pacific coast, between July and December. It's also the time when several species of sea turtle - including the majestic leatherback, green and olive ridley - come to lay their eggs on the beaches.

Tropical fruits in season Try the pejibaye, a fruit with soft, nourishing flesh, or the mamon chino, a small red fruit with a hairy shell, similar to the lychee. A real delicacy!

The secret of the Caribbean The Caribbean: although the Caribbean coast is generally wetter, it enjoys its best weather between September and November, when the rest of the country is still bathed in rain. It's therefore the perfect time to explore its beaches and Afro-Caribbean culture.

Finally, a valuable tip: plan your activities in the morning. In general, the sun is more present in the first part of the day, and in Costa Rica, we get up early! We call this madrugara true philosophy of life here. So, ready to madrugar with us to experience the magic of this lush season?
