Costa Rica's new president, Carlos Alvarado, signed a law this week to increase the size of the country's national park. Rincon de la Vieja.
Currently covering 14,300 hectares, it is set to increase to 16,182 hectares, representing an increase of 13%.
This decision should mean that the inhabitants of the town of Liberia, located at the base of the volcano, will no longer be short of water. Indeed, 32 rivers and streams originate on the slopes of the Rincon de la Vieja volcano.
In other good news, the President insisted that no geothermal or industrial exploitation would be permitted in national parks or protected areas.
Five other national parks are currently being considered for expansion.
