The origins of the concept of sustainability and the emergence of sustainable tourism

The etymology and foundations of sustainability

The term "sustainable" (from the Latin durabilis, meaning "lasting") became popular with the Brundtland Report published in 1987 by the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development. The origin of the term "sustainable", however, lies in a mistranslation of the first version of Brundtland's report. The correct term is "sustainable". Nevertheless, it is "sustainable" that has become part of the vernacular, and has been taken up by the media and public authorities. The report defines sustainable development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs".

This concept is based on three interdependent pillars:

    • Ecological Maintain ecosystems and their biodiversity.
    • Economical Promoting equitable and responsible growth.
    • Social Reducing inequalities and promoting local cultures.

    The emergence of sustainable tourism

The concept of sustainable tourism developed in the 1990s in response to the negative impact of mass tourism on the environment and local societies. This model proposes an alternative based on conservation, responsibility and community participation.

The fundamental principles of sustainable tourism include :

    • Reducing environmental impacts: Protecting fragile ecosystems from degradation caused by tourism infrastructures.
    • Enhancing local cultures: Respecting and promoting the traditions and know-how of host communities.
    • Mutual benefit: Ensuring that economic spin-offs benefit local populations while offering visitors an enriching experience.

Morpho Evasions applies these principles to its programs in Costa Rica, a country that perfectly illustrates the challenges and successes of sustainable travel.
