{"id":4437,"date":"2024-02-06T17:23:01","date_gmt":"2024-02-06T16:23:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/?p=4437"},"modified":"2024-11-26T16:26:12","modified_gmt":"2024-11-26T16:26:12","slug":"association-alianza-mar-y-tierra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/en\/association-alianza-mar-y-tierra\/","title":{"rendered":"Alianza Mar y Tierra Association"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>A coral conservation association: Alianza Mar Y Tierra<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The COVID-19 health and economic crisis has affected tourism more than any other sector, and for Costa Rica the repercussions of the shutdown have been severe. From one day to the next, thousands of Costa Ricans found themselves without jobs or financial security. Experts agreed that tourism had to reinvent itself. Recovering the pre-COVID-19 tourism model was not enough. Not only because consumer attitudes could change, but also because the pandemic showed that the effects of globalization, with the flow of people, accelerated the spread of viruses. Tourism as it operated before the pandemic was no longer viable, and we had to think about rebuilding it on a more sustainable basis, with greater respect for host communities and the environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the Pacific coast of Guanacaste province (as in many other areas), tourism provided a livelihood for the majority of the inhabitants, so they had to invent strategies to set up new projects. It was in this context that the association <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecleanwave.org\/featured_item\/alianza-mar-y-tierra\/\"><strong><i>Alianza Mar y Tierra <\/i><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This citizens' initiative brings together residents of Playas del Coco and Playa Ocotal to create projects for the conservation, management and restoration of marine and terrestrial species. The association aims to develop an open, citizen-based science that will serve as the basis for designing, supporting and implementing actions to restore ecosystems. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What's more, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alianza Mar y Tierra <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aims to promote environmental governance in the various territories of the zone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h3><b><i>What is open science?\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a process in which untrained people become involved in scientific research. Through specific training, they develop skills in restoration and biological monitoring.<\/span><\/i><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The association is behind several initiatives:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cleaning Playa Ocotal and the seabed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">planting trees such as almond, capulin and arbutus<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cleaning the road from Playas del Coco to Playa Ocotal\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">introduction of an environmental education program in the region's schools and colleges<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and a coral restoration program at Playa Ocotal.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4438 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/mar-y-tierra.png\" alt=\"association mar y tierra\" width=\"670\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/mar-y-tierra.png 670w, https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/mar-y-tierra-300x170.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This coral restoration program has been developed in partnership with the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.una.ac.cr\/\">National University of Costa Rica<\/a> and the CIMAR scientific center. Maria Jos\u00e9 Solano, a marine biology student in this laboratory, is currently carrying out her research there. Her thesis is entitled : <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocotal reef restoration: open science for ecosystem restoration and ecological monitoring of the Ocotal coral reef and Snake Bay.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/languages-2\/francais\/\">IPCC<\/a>), it is estimated that at this rate, by 2050, climate change will lead to the disappearance of 70 to 90 % of coral. The situation is therefore worrying, and action is urgently needed. Local residents have formed an association to implement this restoration program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h3><b><i>What is coral and what is it used for?\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corals are marine animals (polyps) that live in symbiosis with algae.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(plants) and produce a calcium carbonate skeleton (rocks). As animals, they feed on organisms that live in water. They breathe like humans and produce waste like all animals.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthy coral reefs provide habitat, food and nurseries for many aquatic species, including commercially important fish species. They are also a major tourist attraction for snorkellers and divers.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But human activity directly affects these reefs, and the causes of their degradation are many and varied:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- rising temperatures, global warming<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- poor waste management<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- the use of agrochemicals that end up in rivers and the sea<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- discharge of wastewater without prior treatment<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- excessive, unregulated tourism<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- poor aquatic activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The restoration of the Ocotal corals is therefore of great environmental importance. This coral nursery, as it is known, is made up of 60 spider-shaped metal structures. The first step is to collect coral fragments by replanting them on the structures. Then, they have to be cleaned every fortnight for several months. When the corals have finally reached maturity, they can be reintroduced to the degraded reef.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4439\" src=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/mar-y-tierra-coraux.jpg\" alt=\"coral costa rica\" width=\"648\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/mar-y-tierra-coraux.jpg 673w, https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/mar-y-tierra-coraux-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4440 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/mar-y-tierra-repiquage.jpg\" alt=\"transplanting coral mar y tierra\" width=\"658\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/mar-y-tierra-repiquage.jpg 658w, https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/mar-y-tierra-repiquage-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 658px) 100vw, 658px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, for almost a year now (April 2023), a group of volunteer citizens from the village have been coming every fortnight to maintain the structures and make sure the corals are growing well. You can read in the eyes of these inhabitants their emotion and wonder at seeing these little creatures grow. Beatriz - a Spanish diving instructor who has been living in Playas del Coco for several months - has taken part in many projects of this type in other parts of the world, including Thailand and Spain. When you listen to her talk, you realize just how precious corals are for our ecosystems and for the survival of species. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luna, one of the association's co-founders, juggles her job conserving turtles on Matapalo beach with her new role as manager of an NGO with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alianza Mar y Tierra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The association is growing and setting up partnerships; it can now count on the help of local diving centers for the loan of equipment and the Costa Rican Red Cross (rescue divers) to lend a hand. The project is no longer just for local residents, but for everyone!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And yes, tourists on vacation in the area can come and meet the founders of the association and spend a day with them to understand the restoration process in more detail and, above all, help develop this nursery.
