It can only be reached by air or sea, and once you're there, you'll feel like you're at the end of the world. <strong>Tortuguero, literally \"Where the turtles lay their eggs\", is also known as \"The Little Amazon\".<\/strong> This name comes from the impressive vegetation that lines the network of canals and lagoons in Tortuguero National Park.<br \/>\nYou\u2019ll also have the opportunity to take a boat or kayak ride along these canals to enjoy the magnificent scenery around you, and you might even spot some caimans or small crocodiles blending in with the floating branches.<\/p>\n<p>In the village of Tortuguero, home to about 1,800 people, everything is very colorful and the atmosphere is very reminiscent of Jamaica. Although it\u2019s small, in addition to numerous hotels, you\u2019ll find several churches, a soccer stadium, and even a small theater. Its residents make their living almost exclusively from tourism or fishing. If you\u2019d like, you can sample local cuisine right there, such as Casado, a typical Costa Rican dish made with rice, which is cooked here with coconut milk.<\/p>\n<h2>Tortuguero National Park:<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Tortuguero<\/strong> has 35 km of beaches, some of which run alongside the village. The sea is rough and swimming is forbidden for safety reasons, but it's here that turtles have been laying their eggs for hundreds of years. In season, from February to July for leatherbacks and from July to October for green turtles, for example, you can admire this incredibly moving spectacle. Night tours accompanied by a guide are even available to enjoy the calm and silence of the night.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The village's main attraction is Tortuguero National Park.<\/strong> <strong>Admission costs $15, but is included in the price if you take a canal tour.<\/strong> Stroll along well-marked trails through the heart of the rainforest and catch a glimpse of the animals that inhabit the park. There are 309 species of birds, 111 species of reptiles, 57 species of amphibians and 60 species of mammals. You'll find some of the country's most famous animals, including agoutis, tree-top sloths, toucans, hummingbirds and several species of monkey, including spider monkeys and howler monkeys. If you don't come across the latter, you're sure to hear its distinctive call! It may even have woken you up in the morning, just before sunrise.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1383\" src=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Tortuguero-Costa-Rica-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Tortuguero costa rica\" width=\"515\" height=\"386\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What to see in Tortuguero National Park?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The village of Tortuguero is considered one of Costa Rica's must-see destinations.  Often on offer the day after tourists arrive, Tortuguero National Park offers a complete change of scenery and the chance to observe numerous wild animals in a magical setting.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tortuguero 15 seg\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YIeWY9b1l70?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>But how was Tortuguero born?<\/h2>\n<p>First of all, a little background.<\/p>\n<p>The history of this picturesque little village is divided into five major periods.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1385\" src=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/village-Tortuguero-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"village tortuguero costa rica\" width=\"395\" height=\"263\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> The pre-Columbian period<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The first recorded inhabitants of Tortuguero are believed to have been Maya people from what is now Mexico. They lived primarily by hunting and fishing, but also by collecting the eggs laid by turtles on the beach. They were also known to cultivate cassava and were very fond of a palm fruit called \u00abpejibaye.\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>At that time, homes were built using locally available materials: roofs made of palm leaves covered a conical structure in which several families lived.<\/p>\n<p>This Mayan colonization was the result of an expansion drive led by the Mayan emperor, who wanted to explore Nicaragua and Costa Rica in search of gold.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> The colonial period<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The first documented presence of Spanish settlers in the Tortuguero region was in the area of San Juan de la Cruz, located about 40 km north of Tortuguero. This small colony, founded in 1541, was intended to facilitate trade between Panama and Nicaragua. There were 25 residents living there, and they remained for only about two years. Throughout the 19th century, a succession of small Spanish colonies were established with the mission of maintaining this site for trade routes.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, Tortuguero saw the arrival of small Afro-Caribbean families seeking work. However, the establishment of large cacao plantations in southern Tortuguero enslaved the indigenous and Afro-Caribbean populations.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong> The arrival of the train<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A railroad line connecting Limon to San Jos\u00e9 was built in 1890. Before that, all transportation went through the Central Valley (Turrialba) and took much longer.<\/p>\n<p>That is why, in 1871, hundreds of English-speaking Afro-Caribbeans, mainly from Jamaica, came to work on the construction of this railroad. They brought with them their way of life and their culture, which are so characteristic of today\u2019s Tortuguero.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong> The era of timber harvesting<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Considered one of the most significant periods in Tortuguero\u2019s history, many \u00abold-timers\u00bb still remember the opening of the first sawmill in 1940. \u00a0This event transformed the village; the population quadrupled, a school was established, transportation was expanded, and a healthcare system was put in place.<\/p>\n<p>At that time, companies paid fixed wages, which was a significant improvement given the circumstances of the era. However, the growing population of the small village of Tortuguero led to overcrowding, resulting in a difficult economic situation.<\/p>\n<p>If you visit the village of Tortuguero, you can see some remnants of that era right in the center of the village. Old, rusty machines are still visible there. The Tortuguero canals themselves are a legacy of that era, as the companies dug them to transport the many floating logs by water.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1386\" src=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSCN3933-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"tortuguero woodworking machine\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong> Currently: tourism development<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>With the end of logging in the Tortuguero area, many workers left the village and Tortuguero returned for a time to agriculture, with the inhabitants living off hunting and fishing. However, the creation of Tortuguero National Park in 1972 changed all that. Turtles were no longer seen as a source of food (via their eggs), but as an object of preservation and later as a tourist attraction.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Caribbean Turtle Conservation Center<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1390\" src=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Nacimiento-de-tortuga-lora.-Playa-Grande.-PNM-Las-Baulas-ICT-300x91.jpg\" alt=\"tortuguero turtle\" width=\"300\" height=\"91\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This nonprofit organization is the oldest and most widely recognized association dedicated to the protection of sea turtles worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1959 by Mr. Joshua B. Powers following the research of biologist Dr. Archie Carr and his book *The Windward Road*. This book was the first to alert the public to the danger facing sea turtles. Numerous volunteers from around the world work to conserve sea turtles in Tortuguero, but that\u2019s not all\u2014the CCCT is active throughout Central America.<\/p>\n<p>There is a tourist center dedicated to turtle conservation in the village of Tortuguero. There, you can see how the turtles are counted, observe the volunteers at work, and watch a short video designed to help visitors better understand the turtle nesting phenomenon.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>When is the right season to visit Tortuguero?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Tortuguero National Park is renowned for its \"aguaceros\" (heavy rains), but what is it really like?<\/p>\n<p><strong>The dry season in Tortuguero<\/strong>: we can consider that the\u00a0<strong>mildest climate<\/strong>\u00a0for this area of the North Caribbean are the months of\u00a0<strong>February<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>March<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>September<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>October<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The wet season in Tortuguero:<\/strong>\u00a0the rainy season extends from<strong>\u00a0November to January<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>from April to August.\u00a0<\/strong>These months are characterized by sunny mornings and very rainy afternoons.<\/p>\n<p>For more details on precipitation:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1391\" src=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/climlat-300x244.jpg\" alt=\"clima tortuguero\" width=\"397\" height=\"323\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What to do in Tortuguero National Park<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>The turtle tour<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>TURTLE EGG-LAYING IN COSTA RICA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Source: wwf Costa Rica<\/p>\n<p><strong>The leatherback turtle and the Atlantic green turtle:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you visit Tortuguero National Park between April and October, you'll have the opportunity to observe these giants of the sea coming to lay their eggs on Tortuguero beach. A local association is in charge of organizing the tours, with professionally trained guides. Prices depend on the provider, but in any case you'll have to pay your entrance fee for Tortuguero National Park (currently, 2015, the rate is 15$ USD per adult). Please note that it is forbidden to bring cameras to film the egg-laying, as turtles are very sensitive to light and it would be extremely regrettable to prevent the egg-laying of a turtle and therefore the survival of the species in order to get a good photo. We recommend wearing dark clothing and making as little noise as possible.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1363\" src=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Tableau-des-pontes-de-tortues-copy-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"turtles costa rica\" width=\"398\" height=\"318\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Source: wwf Costa Rica<\/p>\n<p><strong>The birth of turtles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Tortuguero National Park, from November to January, you may be lucky enough to see turtle eggs hatching all along the beach. After hatching, the baby turtles rise to the surface and make their first dash for the ocean. It's more common to see this superb and moving spectacle in the early morning or late afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Tortuguero National Park<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1392\" src=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Canaux-Tortuguero-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"tortuguero national park\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The most popular way to explore Tortuguero National Park is by motorboat. Depending on the tour operator, the boats may be more or less noisy (some use completely silent electric motors). Tortuguero is surrounded by rivers, canals, and the Atlantic Ocean. Many hotels offer the option to explore the canals by kayak with a naturalist guide or by canoe. This type of canoe allows you to get as close as possible to the animals without startling them and to make the most of Tortuguero National Park. But be warned: you\u2019ll have to paddle for several hours.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, in 2015, the rates have been set at 15 USD per adult and 2$USD per child under 12 years of age.<\/p>\n<p>Tortuguero National Park was established on November 17, 1975, and covers a protected area of 18,946.9 hectares on land and 52,265 hectares at sea.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1393\" src=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/MM-014-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"tortuguero egret\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What animals can you see in Tortuguero National Park?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Tortuguero National Park is known for its turtles, but it is also extremely popular among nature lovers.<\/p>\n<p>There, you'll be able to see three types of monkeys: the\u00a0<strong>spider monkey<\/strong>the\u00a0<strong>howler monkey<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>capuchin monkey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1394\" src=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DF-03022014-2567-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"tortuguero capuchin monkey\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Many mammals, such as the\u00a0<strong>Mexican Tamandua<\/strong>the\u00a0<strong>lazy with two and three fingers<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>white-tailed deer<\/strong>The list is long, very long.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1396\" src=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSCF3533-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"tortuguero sloth\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Birdlife is also abundant, with species such as green macaws, keeled toucans, Swainson's toucans, numerous species of waterfowl and many more...<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1395\" src=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Toucan-\u00e0-car\u00e8ne-282x300.jpg\" alt=\"toucan costa rica\" width=\"282\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Apart from the turtles, the area's animals include the Jaguar, Tapir, pink dolphin, manatee and otter. So many extraordinary animals that make Tortuguero a unique place. Tortuguero National Park boasts the largest concentration of Jaguar in Costa Rica, according to the Costa Rican Wildlife Organization.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pantheracostarica.org\/inicio\/\">Pantera<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1389\" src=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lamantin-300x107.jpg\" alt=\"manatee costa rica\" width=\"300\" height=\"107\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Visit to the museum of the Caribbean Turtle Conservation Centre<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Located north of the village, this organization has set up a small museum to better explain its work to the general public. The small museum is usually run by volunteers who will be happy to show you their work protecting turtles. An adjacent gift shop will allow you to leave with a small gift to give to someone, and the proceeds will go to the organization.<\/p>\n<p>Open from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. (except on Sundays, when the museum closes at 5:00 p.m.). Admission is 1$, but donations are, of course, welcome.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A visit to the village itself<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1397\" src=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1010430-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"tortuguero costa rica\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With its elongated shape, its geographical location (bordered on one side by the Atlantic Ocean and on the other by a brackish water canal), and the people who live there, the village of Tortuguero is worth the trip all on its own.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll find a Caribbean vibe there, where everyone gets around on foot or by bike. Among the most unique spots, you\u2019ll find this school located right across from the ocean, this soccer field overlooking the beach and lined with coconut palms, where locals love to gather after work; this grocery store where the names of customers who haven\u2019t paid their debts are posted; and all these colorful, lively houses on stilts. Don\u2019t hesitate to go dancing or sing (karaoke) at the local nightclub: La Culebra. A complete change of scenery is guaranteed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1398\" src=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Costa-Rica-2012-070-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"tortuguero dance\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How to get to Tortuguero<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Several access options are available:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The easiest:\u00a0<strong>internal flights<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A local airline stands out for the quality of its flights to Tortuguero National Park.<\/p>\n<p>The Company\u00a0<strong>Sansa Costa Rica Airline<\/strong>:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sansacostarica.com\/\">Link<\/a><\/p>\n<p>These companies offer departures from Costa Rica's main cities, and prices are reasonable. Be careful, however, about baggage weight limits.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The most common:\u00a0<strong>by private bus and private boat<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many Tortuguero lodges offer ready-made packages. These usually include transport from San Jos\u00e9 on one of their buses, full board and lodging, transfers on their own boats and on-site tours. All you have to do is choose one of these packages, indicate your departure point in San Jos\u00e9 and your arrival point (also in San Jos\u00e9) and let yourself be guided.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The most authentic:\u00a0<strong>Your car and the Tortuguero public boat<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can rent a car in San Jos\u00e9 or Alajuela (or in any of Costa Rica\u2019s major cities) and drive to the La Pavona or Ca\u00f1o Blanco dock. To find out which of the two boat landings is operational, you\u2019ll need to check in advance, as this depends on the water level in the canals. Generally, the one at La Pavona is the most commonly used.<\/p>\n<p>From there, you can buy a ticket for the public boat that will take you to the village of Tortuguero.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The most economical:\u00a0<strong>Public bus service and public boat<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1400\" src=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSCN3941-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"public boat costa rica\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It's certainly economical, but long and uncomfortable. Transportes Caribe\u00f1os operates the San Jos\u00e9\u2013Cariari\u2013San Jos\u00e9 route.<\/p>\n<p>The schedule is as follows:<\/p>\n<p>From San Jos\u00e9 to Cariari:<br \/>\nEvery day: 6:30 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 6:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>From Cariari to San Jos\u00e9:<br \/>\nEvery day: 5:30 a.m., 6:30 a.m., 7:30 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., and 5:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drive to Tortuguero:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>San Jose Tortuguero Route<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1401\" src=\"https:\/\/morphocostarica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/se-rendre-a-tortuguero-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"getting to tortuguero costa rica\" width=\"246\" height=\"345\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From San Jos\u00e9, take Route 32 toward Lim\u00f3n. You'll pass through Braulio Carillo National Park and the Zurqui Tunnel. You'll then reach the town of Guapiles.<\/p>\n<p>Note: It is currently no longer possible to travel to Tortuguero from Sarapiqui. Previously, travelers had to cross the border into Nicaragua. However, since Nicaragua has implemented strict health measures, it is now prohibited to travel through Nicaragua to reach Tortuguero.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FROM GUAPILES TO CARIARI:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once in Guapiles, stay on Route 32 until you reach the Santa Clara gas station (\"Servicentro Santa Clara\"). About 100 m past the Burger King. After the gas station, turn left (north). Set the speedometer to zero and drive for 8.1 km, until you reach a crossroads. Turn left (do not cross the railroad line), drive along the railway line for about 700 m and then turn right onto the main road. (crossing the railway this time). Continue north for 10.4 km to reach Cariari. Please note that you should arrive in Cariari before 3:30 p.m., as no public boats leave for Tortuguero National Park after this time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FROM CARIARI TO PAVONA:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From the Cariari gas station\u2014the only one in the village\u2014continue for 7.1 km.<\/p>\n<p>Next, turn right toward Campo Dos. You\u2019ll pass through banana plantations. Follow the signs for Campo Dos and Cuatro Esquinas. Continue on the paved road until you reach a soccer field on your left. Then turn left onto the paved road. Continue until you reach the village of Cuatro Esquinas. From this point on, the road is no longer paved. Continue straight for 8.9 km until you reach the \u00abAbast Palacio\u00bb store in the small village of Palacios. Turn left after this store, then continue straight for 5.7 km until you reach an old building. Turn left onto the dirt road and cross the bridge. Then continue until you arrive at La Pavona.<\/p>\n<p>You can park your car for 10$USD per night or 50$USD per week.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>10 tips for enjoying Tortuguero National Park<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>When you take a trip along the canals of Tortuguero, always pack a rain cape. The climate in the Caribbean can change very quickly, and you could find yourself in a huge downpour in the middle of a national park.<\/li>\n<li>Do not use a flash when taking wildlife photographs. This applies to all wildlife photography in Costa Rica.<\/li>\n<li>Don't swim in the sea. Tortuguero beach has many rollers and the ocean is anything but calm in Tortuguero. What's more, many sharks swim around in search of turtles. The beach is unsupervised, so don't swim.<\/li>\n<li>Take advantage of the kayaks offered by the lodges or explore Tortuguero National Park by canoe. The approach is totally different from that of a motorboat, making the experience all the more impressive.<\/li>\n<li>Visit local souvenir shops, most of which offer items unique to Costa Rica that you wouldn't find again later. What's more, you'll be helping local communities.<\/li>\n<li>Use your national park entrance fee wisely. In fact, once you've paid your entrance fee, it's valid for the whole day, so you can take the canal tours in the morning, walk around the park in the afternoon and take a night tour, all with a single payment.<\/li>\n<li>When hiring a local guide, make sure he or she has official Costa Rican guide certification.
